The Rededication of the Mary Ellen Goodman Memorial Library
A welcome will be offered by the Dean of the School of Social Sciences, Lyn Ragsdale. Refreshments will be served.
Mary Ellen Goodman served on the faculty of the Department of Anthropology and Sociology from 1965 to 1969, and was the first woman to hold a tenured professorship in the social sciences at Rice University. The bequest of her personal book collection became the nucleus of a departmental library, which grew over time to an unmanageable size and fell into disuse. Over the past year, volunteers from the Department of Anthropology have removed outdated materials from the collection and reorganized it for a new generation of users.
2012 marks the 40th anniversary of the Goodman Memorial Library's presentation to the Rice community. Please join us as we unveil a plaque honoring Professor Goodman and reflect on the legacy she left behind.
