On August 18, Professors Cymene Howe and Dominic Boyer will commemorate the loss of the Okjökull glacier to climate change in an official memorial ceremony. A special plaque will be installed following an "un-glacier tour," led by the two professors. This event is presented in conjunction with the documentary film, Not Ok, Howe and Boyer released in 2018.
“This will be the first monument to a glacier lost to climate change anywhere in the world,” said Cymene Howe. “By marking Ok’s passing, we hope to draw attention to what is being lost as Earth’s glaciers expire.”
Boyer said Okjökull’s fate “will be shared by all of Iceland’s glaciers unless we act now to radically curtail greenhouse gas emissions”.
