Anthropology of Biomedicine, Africa, and/or African Diaspora

The Department of Anthropology at Rice University, located in Houston, Texas, invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor to begin July 1, 2021. As part of university-wide effort to support the newly-created Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS), we seek a medical anthropologist and/or STS scholar focused on race and health or biomedicine in Africa or the African diaspora. Possible topics could include but are not limited to African/American biomedicine, environmental racism, and/or (post)genomics. In addition to this thematic specialization, we are looking for a colleague that can contribute to teaching theory requirements in our graduate and undergraduate degrees. We are committed to an expansive understanding of African and African American studies as a field of research and theoretical innovation that belongs to the center of our field, not to its margins. In tandem with our department's strengths in multiscalar approaches, candidates should have a track record of methodological innovation in anthropological ethnography. Faculty members are expected to perform research, publish scholarly articles and books, and to keep up with current research in the field. They also teach classes at the graduate and undergraduate level, supervise and grade student work, and serve on committees within the university, in addition to performing service to the profession at large.

The position is approved at the Assistant Professor rank, but exceptional applicants at a more senior level may be considered, subject to university approval. Candidates must currently have a Ph.D. or complete the Ph.D. by July 1, 2021. Political and Legal Anthropology and/or Political Economy, Africa, and/or African Diaspora

As part of a university-wide effort to support the newly-created Center for African and African American Studies (CAAAS) at Rice University, we seek a sociocultural anthropologist who works on political and legal anthropology, economic anthropology, and/or political economy in relation to contemporary issues in Africa and/or the African diaspora. Candidates whose work intersects with science and technology studies are welcome. Candidates’ research will focus on the structural and/or historical factors that shape political, legal and economic conditions globally, including, but not limited to, legacies of exploitation, racism, and white supremacy. In addition to this thematic specialization, we are looking for a colleague who can contribute to teaching requirements in our graduate and undergraduate programs, including, but not limited to, decolonial, postcolonial, or other critical approaches to theory.
