Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music has admitted its first students, including first-year student Marcel González, into its new orchestral conducting program—the only undergraduate major of its kind in the United States. González, who is also studying anthropology, treats both fields as deeply interconnected, empathetic arts that strive to understand and recreate the human experience.
