Senior Sumin Yoon wins the 2023 SMA W.H.R. Rivers Undergraduate Student Paper Prize for his paper Gifted Care: Reconfiguring HIV/AIDS Caregiving in the Post-Treatment Era.”
"The committee unanimously selected Yoon’s paper for its rich ethnography and innovative examination of gifted care as social and biological transformation for those seeking hospice care for AIDS. This is an important and compelling topic. The prize committee was also impressed with Yoon’s nuanced and at times novel engagement with relevant scholarship and theory in medical anthropology related to chronicity, care, biomedicine, and reciprocity."
As a recipient of the award, Yoon received a cash prize and was invited to receive the award in person at the Society for Medical Anthropology Awards Ceremony on Friday, November 17, 2023.
